ER and Snakes

Been a while since I actually have written a post instead of just sending a picture, but it's been an eventful week, thought I'd memoralize it. Started off rather slow, spent the days working, came home Monday and clean out the mouse turds from behind (and in) the oven. Wed. Jennifer felt a numbness in her face and blindness in her left eye, after much wrangling we spent about three hours in the evening at the ER in Clear Lake (I stayed in the car with the kids). And then yesterday (Saturday), Ruby, August and I were down at the creek, and Ruby want to show me the snake she found--after quickly identifying it as a rattler, I called Wayne, he came over and tried to catch it--but it turned out to be very difficult and he ended up killing it. There was still a smaller rattler that we couldn't catch or kill that is still in the yard. Tried to take a picture of it, but my phone was dead and woudln't stay on.
Today, much slower, just cleaning the house. Although I did setup my wifi network--can't get my printer to work, though.

Ruby’s first day of First Grade today. I went in late to work so that I could go with Jen to drop her off. A lot of emotions—more so than when she started Kindergarten. On three fronts very hard:
--Sympathy. Fear of the unknown and new, starting off on a journey in which I don’t think children can understand. Starting school is like being woken up in the middle of the night to go on a car ride with a mysterious destination.
--Sadness. For so long every part of Ruby’s life was known, and mostly controlled, by us. Now, 6 hours of her life will be lost to us, ½ of her waking life, gone. Now we will have to become inquisitors to try and worm our way in. And this will just continue (unless, of course, we stick to our plan to home school her after Sixth Grade). And other people will be influencing her—giving her thoughts and ideas that we may not approve of, and it will be up to Ruby to integrate those into her universe.
--Apprehension. Have we prepared Ruby enough? Will she excel in school? Will she turn inward or blossom? Could we have done more, done it better? Jen and I have good intentions, but maybe we don’t always follow through. I hope, though, that we have instilled in her enough confidence to believe in herself and succeed.

The facts: Ruby’s teacher is Ms. Heyword, Room 12. She starts school at 8:50 and gets out at 3:10. There are 9 girls and 11 boys in her class. Jen stayed in Ruby’s class until time for the assembly, about 9:30. She said the teacher asked the class what “respect” means and Ruby raised her hand and answered, but she was very nervous when she talked, but gave a good definition nonetheless.
Before class we went to the coffee shop on Cobb Mountain. August was being a pain and wanting to crawl everywhere. Ruby had hot chocolate and a bagel. Emily and the girls came by and then Tammy and Lindsey. And then it was time to leave for school.

News on the Vino-Lok front from Down Under. The Australians are willing and able to experiment--I don't know if we are more cautious here in the U.S., are just too nervous to try anything new. My main beef with the below article is that the winery switching to Vino-Lok says their TCA problem has been growing--that is the opposite of my experience and unless the Aussies get all of the U.S.'s rejected cork, a misconcpetion or a lack of good quality control. An intensive and regimented cork qc program can reduce your overall TCA to less than 1%--not to say that 1% is good--but I can't imagine how lax qc must be to let 5% slip through.

The family and friends had a mixed time at the first MotoGP event in the U.S. since 1994. Going into it we knew that it would be crowded, it was the only event at Laguna Seca that was sold out before the day of, over 55,000 tickets, but we didn't really expected, or appreciate what the reality would be. We got to San Jose well enough, there by about 3:30, and hit the pool then met Tansie and Brad at the Obon festival (the largest one in the U.S.)--different than I thought it would be--we got there too late to see some of the drumming, but we did catch about 800 people performing fan dances (don't know what else to call them). The Slavens got hungry and split, but we visited with Tansie for a bit (if you read this Tansie, thanks for inviting us and sorry we couldn't see each other more), afterwards we ate some sushi (although Jen order the assorted Nigiri, thinking she was being adventursome ordering rolls with real fish (she normally only eats the fake crab kind), but instead we get the sashimi (raw fish on top of rice), we both split it, and some of them were good, but not all. Ruby played (and ate a bit of) the octupus--she liked the suckers on the tentacles.
After getting back we crashed, knowing that we were planning on getting up at 5:00 to head out to Monterey for the race. And that is what we did, up at 5, out by 6, breakfast and then onto Monterey. We make good time, get to the hotel where the tickets are to be picked up, then someone tells us there is a shuttle from the hotel to the race, so we get and line and wait about an hour, not a shuttle in site. We finally decide to drive there ourselves and the first two miles took about five minutes, the last 4 miles took about 2 hours. There was so much traffic it felt like we would never make it to the track by the time the race started at 2:00. But we did, barely. And everyone was pretty good until we had to trek another 1/2 hour through the park to find a place to sit--Jen and I ended up stopping early--August was fed up and needed some boob, so we hung out close to the track and waited until the race started--got to see the bikes up close. Then we climb up to the mountain, or so it seemed, that Emily and Wayne had set up on--from there we watched the rest of the race, all 47 minutes of it--the MotoGP bikes go really, really fast. We watched the next race, got some bad, way overpriced food and then took off to leave--getting out was worse than getting in. We ended up sitting by our cars for over an hour, not even bothering to get in line to leave--it wasn't going any where, we finally got out, sitting through more traffic on each major highway we hit. Dinner was at McDonald's--yea. We didn't get back to the hotel until 10:00--Wayne drove all the way back to Middletown.
Oh, before I forget, note to myself, always ask for bottom floor of building 4 at the San Jose Hyatt.
This morning we relaxed by the pool then headed out.
If we plan it better, we'll do it again next year. This go around we didn't have enough food or drink and that didn't help waiting out the traffic. But the actual race was exciting--damn bikes are so fast and they take those turns so tight.
Ah well, back to work tomorrow, but we will be looking at the 190 acres that is for sale outside of Middletown--be interesting to see.

For the record, I'd say this is the day that August is a complete and utter crawling animal. We made it to the hotel in San Jose (the Hyatt near the airport) and he is just loving scotting all over the room. And every time he hits a flat verticle surface he is trying to pull himself up and stand--usually with some degree of success.

Heading out to MotoGP

The family is heading out to MotoGP today, first stop is San Jose where hopefully we can see Tansie. Then tomorrow we drive to Monterey for the soldout race (55,000 people). Should be exciting, the motorcycles get over 200mph. Check out the race and track at: laguna-seca.com.

I'm sitting here typing away, I got woke up by Wayne this morning, Jen is at work, August is eating Joe's O's next to me, Oskar is eating the O's off the floor and Ruby is cleaning her room so that she can watch Sinbad. The house is a mess, my next job after typing this entry is cleaning (after making coffee, feed August some real food and getting breakfast for Ruby).

Have a fun night with Wayne and Emily, we visited their friends Jim and Kelly who were camping at Boggs State Park (about 15 min.'s from our house) so that Jim could mountain bike. Its a nice park, hardly anyone there even though it was 4th of July weekend and there was some big race there.

Been busy the last few days, we bottled Pennino and Estate Cab Franc (I should post some images of them) and I had a significant presentation on Friday--which turned out well--now I have a follow up one in 4 weeks about centralizing purchasing--I'll need to do a lot of work.

We'll August is fussing, time to go.

Probably just hang out at the house today--maybe hit Anderson Springs later if it gets too hot. Tomorrow is firework in Calistoga (and maybe I can buy a MP3 player).

What else is going on? Dad is in Sarles for a big reunion--I'm glad he got up there, I hope he takes lots of pictures.

Speaking of pictures, I've got a lot to upload, maybe I can get to them tonight.

OK, now August is really fussing.

Courtesy of my good friend Chad (thanks, Chad), I've been watching the new Dr. Who series from England. I wasn't that impressed with the pilot, "Rose", but since then I've warmed up to it quite a bit. I've seen one about the end of the Earth, the dead rising up, aliens in London and then the Dalek. I think the Dalek was a little overplayed--but fun, none-the-less. Ruby loves them, and she has a lot of good questions--is the Dalek good? Is the Dr. bad? The Dr. has definitely done some questionable things--seems this personality is radically different than the previous 8--but I don't know how this "timewar" changed him. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series though.

Another beautiful day in the Napa Valley. Had a nice meeting outside

packagingWINE.com is coming along nicely--don't have much time to update it's look, but content is getting created, which is always good.

Probably go canoeing this weekend again, just bought August a vest, so he can go out with us. Also got a proper canoe paddle, albeit a cheap one, we'll see if it is any better then the kayak ones we are using. Also got a goofy paddling hat.

Also planning a camping trip for the weekend after July 4th. I'll take a day off so we can do two nights.
